Photocopies and transcriptions of letters written to Edward Stevens of Woodstock, Wisconsin, who served with Company C of the 1st Wisconsin Heavy Artillery during the Civil War. Collection consists of photocopies of service records for Edward, and photocopies of letters written to him by his brothers. Transcriptions consist of forty-two letters compiled together by the donor, Craig R. Albrechtson. Letters were written by various family members to Edward throughout the duration of the war. His three brothers, Adelbert, Charles, and Joshua, served in different units and wrote letters to Edward prior to and after his own enlistment. Adelbert served with the 12th Wisconsin, Company K; Charles served with the 11th Wisconsin, Company D, was discharged for illness and then reenlisted with the 42nd Wisconsin, Company B; and Joshua served with the 12th Wisconsin, Company K, was discharged for illness and then reenlisted with the 30th Wisconsin, Company A. Letters describe life in the Union Army, descriptions of minor skirmishes, and illness and medical care. Also included are a Stevens family tree and a brief biography documenting the service of the Stevens brothers.
